Credit Card Fraud Tips

Using your Card

  1. Do business with reputable merchants or vendors only.
  2. When paying for goods and services do not let the card out of your sight.
  3. Only use your Credit Card to buy things over the internet from reputable sites that use high levels of security.
  4. If you don't plan to leave a tip, draw a line through the tip or blank lines on the charge slip, this will prevent someone else from adding to the total.
  5. Ensure that you retrieve your card after making a transaction.

PIN Security

  1. Memorise your PIN (Personal Identification Number) never write it down.
  2. Destroy the letter you receive your PIN on.
  3. If you select your own PIN do not choose a number that can easily be associated with you, (such as part of your name, date of birth etc.)
  4. Do not tell anyone your PIN including your family and friends.
  5. Do not let anyone see you enter your PIN at an ATM or Eftpos terminal.

Verification

  1. Keep a record of all transactions you make especially from overseas, check each of these transactions against your statement.
  2. Contact us on 131 728 immediately if any unrecognized charge appears on your statement.

Card Security

  1. Protect your cards as if they were cash always keep them in a secure place.
  2. Sign your card as soon as you receive it.
  3. Do not let anyone else use your card.
  4. Destroy all old, cancelled or expired cards.
  5. Use Verified by Visa. Its added password protection measure increases the safety of online transactions.
  6. Ignore any unsolicited emails or phone calls seeking your personal or account information. Visa does not initiate contact with cardholders by email or phone to seek personal or financial information.
  7. Tear up or shred all pre-approved credit card offers, old cheques and deposit slips before throwing them away.
  8. Never write a card number on a Cheque for identification purposes
  9. Report lost and stolen cards immediately and arrange for a replacement card to be issued to you.
  10. Keep a list of all your credit card numbers in case of theft and notify each card issuer immediately if theft occurs.
